EU border guards after deal with Libya
European authorities have agreed to send a team of border guards to help patrol Greece’s frontier with Turkey, which has emerged as the main point of entry for illegal immigrants to the European Union.
According to the European Commission, 90 per cent of illegal entries into the EU are now made at the Greek-Turkish border – 45,000 in the first half of 2010 alone.
The surge at the Greek-Turkish border follows EU agreements with north African states, notably Libya, which made it harder for asylum seekers to cross the Mediterranean, until recently the most popular migration route to Europe.
